Why is one radiator cold when the rest work?

Cold at the top means air, and bleeding it takes two minutes. Cold at the bottom or in the middle usually means sludge, which bleeding won't fix. If it's the radiator furthest from the boiler, the system may just need balancing. All three are quick to diagnose in person.

What is a power flush and do I need one?

A power flush pumps cleaning chemicals through your radiators at speed to shift years of black iron-oxide sludge. You probably need one if radiators are cold at the bottom, the water that comes out during bleeding is black, or the boiler kettles like an old stove. You probably don't if the system heats evenly and the water runs clear, whatever a pushy quote says.

Are smart thermostats worth it?

For most homes, yes, mainly for the scheduling and the ability to turn the heating off remotely when you're out longer than planned. Pair one with thermostatic radiator valves and you get room-by-room control without a full zoning project. We fit and set them up so they actually talk to your boiler properly.

The cold radiator problem

Most heating call-outs start the same way: "the radiator in the back bedroom never gets warm." The diagnosis matters, because the fixes range from free to a few hundred quid.

Cold at the top? Air. Bleed it, two minutes, done. Cold at the bottom while the top's hot? That's sludge sitting in the base, and no amount of bleeding will shift it. Furthest room from the boiler always lukewarm? The system needs balancing, which is a fiddly job with a radiator key and patience rather than any parts at all.

We'll tell you which one you've got before we do anything, and if it's the free one, we'll show you how to do it yourself next time. That costs us a repeat visit and earns us a customer for life, which we've decided is a fair trade.

Power flushing, honestly

Power flushing has a slightly grubby reputation because it gets sold to people who don't need it. Here's the honest test: if your radiators are cold at the bottom, the water runs black when you bleed them, or the boiler sounds like a kettle, a flush will make a real difference you can feel. If the system heats evenly and bleeds clear, keep your money.

When we do flush, we finish with inhibitor chemicals and recommend a magnetic filter, so the sludge you paid to remove doesn't just start rebuilding the next day. Warwickshire's hard water makes the inhibitor step matter more here than in softer parts of the country.

TRVs and smart controls

If your radiators still have plain manual valves, thermostatic ones are the cheapest comfort upgrade going. Each room holds its own temperature, the spare room stops being heated to tropical for nobody, and the boiler works less.

Add a smart thermostat and you can run the heating from your phone. Honestly, the novelty wears off in a fortnight. The scheduling is what saves the money.

Do I need a power flush?

Only if the symptoms say so: cold-bottomed radiators, black bleed water, kettling. If a quote includes a flush and you've got none of those, ask why. We're happy to be the second opinion.

Can you add a radiator to an existing system?

Usually, yes. The questions are whether the boiler has the spare capacity and where the pipes can run. A quick look answers both, and adding a radiator to a conservatory or converted loft is a common job for us.
